South Baltimore Tree Project Digs Saturday

The second part of the South Baltimore Tree Project will take place Saturday, Sept. 26. The project involves preparing 9 tree pits (6 on Gittings; 3 on Fort) for a fall planting. Meet at 9am at St. Mary's Star of the Sea (Riverside & Gittings). All ability and experience levels are welcome. Bring pets, kids, and friends. Tools and light refreshments will be provided.

The South Baltimore Tree Project is a joint neighborhood planting project with Riverside, Federal Hill South, and the South Baltimore Neighborhood associations. The project is funded by a grant from the Chesapeake Bay Trust, which paid for 30 new tree locations within the South Baltimore area.

Volunteer at the Street Beat Festival

The Federal Hill Street Beat Festival - the biggest and best festival of the season - is just around the corner! Don't miss the fun on Sunday, September 20th, 11 am to 7 pm, along S. Charles Street between Hamburg and West and on E. Cross Street, both sides of Cross Street Market.

Volunteers are still needed to sell beer tickets and pour beer. Get a front row seat for the action: 18 bands on three stages, arts & crafts and food & drink vendors along South Charles and East Cross Streets, Little Ones Lane, and new this year: dedicated Doggie area (leashes required).

Local Input Sought on Proposed Slots Facility

A group of local citizens is charged with representing the interests of those most affected by the major slots development coming to South Baltimore. The plans are still being finalized for the complex with 3,750 slots, live entertainment, bars, and restaurants, but the Local Development Council (LDC) is polling area residents to determine major areas of concern for the large-scale project, which will be located east of Russell Street and south of M&T Stadium.

Composed of seven community representatives, four business/institutional members, three legislative representatives, and one representative of the Baltimore City Entertainment Group, the LDC has three primary missions: review of the master plan for development of the site, consultation in transportation planning, and consultation on the expenditure of “local impact grant funds” earmarked for the area surrounding the facility, once slots are operational.

Co-chairing the LDC are State Senator George Della and community representative Betty Bland-Thomas, Sharp-Leadenhall Community Association. Other community representatives are Julie Tice, South Baltimore Neighborhood Association; Cynthia Griffin, Federal Hill West Community Association; Paul Robinson, Federal Hill Neighborhood Association; Jack Baker, Southern District Police Community Relations Council; Narda Carroll, Pigtown/Washington Village; and James Alston, Westport Community. Nonvoting advisors are Brad Slater, Riverside Neighborhood Association, and Dave Hirst, Federal Hill South Neighborhood Association.

Business/institutional members are Sonny Morstein, Federal Hill Business Association; Rev. Alvin J. Gwynn, Leadenhall Baptist Church, Michael Seipp, The Baltimore Station; and Ian Neuman, Carroll Camden Industrial Park Association. Nonvoting advisor is Michael Frenz, Maryland Stadium Authority.

In addition to Sen. Della, Delegate Brian McHale and City Council Vice President Ed Reisinger are legislative members. Michael Cryor of Baltimore City Entertainment Group, LP, represents the licensee.

Last Chance to Buy a Brick for Federal Hill

Become a permanent part of Federal Hill by purchasing a brick in the sidewalk in front of the Federal Hill Visitors Center and Main Street office at 42 E. Cross Street. You can have your name, business name or company logo engraved on it -- or create a personal message.

Bricks are available in two sizes and start at $100. Proceeds from these bricks supports Federal Hill Main Street's community revitalization and promotion efforts. Use this form to place your order.

The order deadline is Sept. 21. Bricks will be installed this fall.

Shop Crawl Coming: Thursday, Sept. 10

Be sure to check out the "Best Shopping Neighborhood" in Baltimore on Thursday, Sept. 10th, 6 to 9 pm, when Baltimore Magazine holds its popular Federal Hill VIP Shop Crawl. Federal Hill is the "featured place" in the latest edition of a new online weekly magazine, "Bmore." Touting the charms of our community with its great shops and restaurants, the article cited Babe, Whimsy/Reason, and the Cross Street Market.
