For two weeks before Christmas, the Angel Tree stood in the middle of Cross Street Market, encouraging passers-by to sponsor a child in need by providing him or her with a present. Over 102 packages, $1,700 worth of gifts, were donated to the cause. Market merchants encouraged giving by awarding those who donated gifts with a $5 Marketbuxx coupon, good at participating merchants in Cross Street Market.
Robert Wilson of Konstant’s Hot Dogs worked with other Market vendors to coordinate the project. "It came as no surprise that this year's economic downturn affected abnormal numbers of families. The Angel Tree program was a way for the merchants in the market to give back to the community, as the community gives so much for the Cross Street Market," said Robert Wilson.
The program was so effective that the program will be expanded next year with Angel Trees at multiple Baltimore public markets.
